Steering Committee


The staff of the Institute of Enterprise Ethics is a small but focused team of professionals dedicated to the Mission & Purpose of the Institute.

Robert Giacalone

Dr. Robert Giacalone
Daniels Chair in Business Ethics, Daniels College of Business

Dr. Robert Giacalone joins The Daniels College of Business from Temple University, Fox School of Business and Management, where he was a professor of human resource management and formerly, the acting director of the Center for Ethics and Organizational Integrity.

He is the former editor in chief of the Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion and former editor of Ethics In Practice. He serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Learning and Education, Journal of Management Spirituality and Religion and Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies.

Giacalone has received numerous awards, grants and honors, including the Fox School of Business Dean’s Research Honor Roll, MERI Institute Fellowship and the GMAC Faculty Research Grant

Bill Heck

Mr. Bill Heck
President, Colorado Chapter, National Association of Corporate Directors

Bill Heck specializes in developing and designing board of director, executive, sales and broad based compensation plans at the Harlon Group. He works with publicly and closely held companies and their compensation committees to include food wholesalers/retailers, manufacturing, energy and telecommunication companies, health care systems and real estate companies in maintaining equity incentive plans for senior executives.

His experience has been gained from contributions made to Arthur Andersen and BKD, LLP, by helping organizations retain top talent through effectively designed compensation and human capital plans. Bill has served as Chief People Officer of two major national health care systems as well as developing consulting practices with the Hay Group, an international management consulting firm.
Chris MacMillan

Assistant Dean of College Operations, Daniels College of Business


Christine MacMillan manages the strategic planning process and implementation for the Daniels College of Business and also manages college rankings.

Lorenzo Patelli

Dr. Lorenzo Patelli
Assistant Professor, School of Accountancy, Daniels College of Business

Dr. Lorenzo Patelli joined the Daniels College of Business in 2011 as an assistant professor. Prior to joining the School of Accountancy, he taught at Benedictine College and previously at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He earned his PhD from Università Bocconi in 2006. Patelli has served as editor of the Journal of International Business and as an ad-hoc reviewer for a number of journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Management and Governance, and European Accounting Review.

He has received a number of academic honors, including several teaching excellence awards and the 2008 David Solomons Prize from Management Accounting Research.

Carole Sumption

Ms. Carole Sumption
Vice President, Corporate Resources, Pinnacol Assurance

Carole Sumption heads up Pinnacol’s Human Resources, Learning and Development, Safety and Security, Facilities and Corporate Services functions and serves as the Chair of the Pinnacol Foundation scholarship program. Carole is also an Executive sponsor of several large projects as well as the Diversity Task Force, the Gainsharing Task Force and Pinnacol’s Everyday Wellness program.

Prior to joining Pinnacol in 2008, Sumption served as vice president of relationship management with Oppenheimer Funds, Inc. She also served as vice president of human resources with Policy Studies Inc. and First Data Corporation. During her tenure as senior vice president of human resources and corporate services with Synovus Financial Corporation — a company with more than 10,000 employees — Synovus received first place in Fortune magazine’s ranking of “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
Janet Valades

Ms. Janet Valades
Former Director Safety, Strategy and Risk Management, Hess Corporation

Janet Valades has deep and diverse experience in non-renewable industries, primarily oil and gas, with international companies Getty Oil, Texaco Inc., Chevron Texaco, and Hess Corporation. She is well versed in leading creation and implementation of short, medium and long-­term strategies that capture business value in all facets of the oil and gas value chain across multiple disciplines. This includes fostering durable results by addressing leadership, corporate culture and performance accountability dimensions across an enterprise, line of business or asset.
